Scientific?
2012
I hope no one watched this movie expecting some revelation about the end of the world, in that respect we'd all be shooting ducks in a barrel. But outstanding special effects overcome the plot which seems to have been written by your favorite scrubbing bubble. Five stars for tackling the Mayan calendar with a sledge hammer!

Sandra Bullock's Surprising Performance
The Blind Side
I have always been a fan of romantic comedies where you can see the happy ending from the beginning. Therefore, I'm a pretty big fan of Sandra Bullock because the genre that she usually goes with is romantic comedy.

I was shocked by her performance in The Blind Side. She was so believeable as a rich white southern woman that took in a homeless black teenager with no questions asked. After the movie was over, I remembered thinking "She deserves an Oscar for this performance". That premonition came true tonight. She really earned it.

This is one of my new favorite movies. I will definitly be buying this as soon as possible. If you haven't seen The Blind Side, you really should. It is so good to know that people like the characters portrayed in this movie actually exist.

2012: Not Really Epic
2012 (Two-Disc Special Edition) [Blu-ray]
2012 was just alright to me. Not nearly as epic as what I was expecting. It actually reminded me of Jurassic Park, but they were running from earthquakes instead of dinosaurs.

What did impress me was the subliminal storyline of a modern-day Noah's Arch. I feel like if they had brought more of that to the surface it would have created a real message behind the movie, making it way more interesting. Something we could have taken with us after watching the movie. Something epic. Instead, I won't have remembered even seeing this movie unless someone else mentions it.

Great workout, but be careful if you are injury prone
Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred
Great workout in a short amount of time! I am only about 15 pounds overweight and I wanted to lose a few pounds and tone up. However, after doing level one for a week, I developed bicep tendonitis in my left (weaker) arm from all the pushups. I looked ahead to level 2 and 3 hoping to find exercises I could use to replace the pushups, but I saw more pushups and exercises in that same position. I guess I will rest the arm for a few weeks and look for some exercises to subsitute for some of the pushups so that I can do the rest of the video. Also, be very careful with your knees on all of the lunges and squats.

Book Fans Will Love It
The Twilight Saga: New Moon [Blu-ray]
The director of the first Twilight movie, Catherine Hardwicke, was changed over to Chris Weitz, which I found changed the feel of the movie a great deal. I don't know if I can credit him with the change in Bella's (Kristen Stewart) acting or if some other force took control of her body, but I am thankful. She has done away with the excessive sputtering that was overly comical in the first film. (Remember the hospital scene where Edward was going to leave her? I think the lines went something like "I...but...no...you...can't...no...no...why...whyr...shio...as.....whiiii...") Her twitches have been toned down and her eye flickering was kept to a minimum.

Those that are Team Jacob will be happy for all of those shirtless scenes he has. And Taylor Lautner deserves all the ooh's and aah's he received. His acting chops are still nothing to be raved about, but he's trying, and he worked his butt off to get this role, so that bumps him up a notch in my book.

Team Edward fans need not worry. Even though New Moon focuses more on Bella and Jacob's relationship, Edward (Robert Pattinson) makes appearances throughout. However, Edwards shirtless scenes did not evoke anything from the audience like Jacobs scenes did. Edward is just a pale, thin, vampire, what do you expect. (And I'm Team Edward!)

So while the acting was so-so in many parts, it's still an entertaining film, especially for teenagers and fans of the books. I look forward to Eclipse, which will be out on June 30, 2010, where I hope to see more of the supporting cast. (The best actors of the bunch are hidden in the back.)

Winner of 6 Oscars Incl. BEST PICTURE
The Hurt Locker
Terrific and compelling film and deserving of its 6 oscars. Readers would be advised to read more of the older reviews, though. The page will inevitabley now be flooded with crazed Avatar fanbois trashing the film even though they've never seen it or pretend they have. They are in meltdown mode at the moment.

Brilliant movie about the sterile process of firing people
Up in the Air
Half way though Up in the Air I heard myself let out a sigh of joy. How amazing! Somebody finally made a movie about the horrible, sterile, meeting that downsized employees endure when they learn that they are being fired.

Up in the Air is a movie about a business that makes its money firing (career transitioning!) people, and not just anyone, mostly middle aged and older people who are part of large layoffs. As George Clooney's character Ryan Bingham explains it, the executives who hire them don't want to do it themselves. The movie is not about the inhumanness of laying someone off. It's about the inhuman process used to lay people off. The words used are so neutral and cool that they might be coming from a robot--words that do not even acknowledge the disaster that is being visited upon the person being fired.

It's no coincidence that the young woman apprentice in this movie, lays people off who are older than herself. She's a kid, and she's in way, way over her head. What is dispicable is not that she took this job--but that someone else was so cold and cynical that he gave it to her. He gave it to her knowing the effect that her inexperience is going to have on the people whom she is firing.

But Up in the Air is not an angry movie. It's a thougtful one. Ryan Bingham tries to do the job as well as he can. He tries to give the people he fires some kind of hope. He tries to make the process human. But the verbage he uses (which is the company approved "process") makes the meeting less human because it implies that the employer has no obligation to feel anything, not even pity, for the person being fired. Still Bingham has a heart and he tells his co-worker "this is the worst day of their lives." The fact that Bingham knows this and is willing to face that fact day after day, is what elevates this movie and makes it more than an attack on corporations. Bingham is not perfect. He has commitment problems and he's obsessed with his frequent flier miles. But when you come right down to it--he does his best to make the experience of being fired less insulting and inhuman than it would be otherwise.

But Ryan Bingham seems to realize that as brave as he is, the language he uses is just a form of defense--a way to remove the person delivering the news, from the anguish his message is causing. I left the movie hoping that it would motivate at least a few executives to cut out the offensive double-speak and vague language used when people are fired. If a corporation must lay people off, why not say, "I'm so sorry. We screwed up and hired too many people. We know that this is unfair. We know that this is miserable. We're sorry because we know those things. We are glad we are not you--but if we don't lay people off we are going to be out of our own jobs." Many small business owners do say these things. Why should corporate executives be different? A change like that would show that just maybe those who have to lay people off are not "up in the air."

It is sweet and weird.
The Princess and the Frog (Single Disc Widescreen)
By Olivia

The movie The Princess and the Frog is about a girl who has a dad and a mom. Her dad wants a restaurant, but never gets one. The girl takes his place and earns the restaurant. Before she earns the restaurant, when she prays a frog appears by her window. If you see the movie, you'll find out what happens next.

My favorite part of the movie was when the crocodile came on the boat like a fox. He went on the boat because he wanted to play jazz with the people but they just scattered him off like a cat. When I saw this I was eager to see what was going to happen next.

A movie that inspired me to go see The Princess and the Frog was the movie Cinderella. It has romance and balls in it just like The Princess and the Frog. The part with romance in Cinderella that inspired me was when the prince and Cinderella get married.

If you are someone who is looking for a fairytale with romance then the movie The Princess and the Frog is the movie for you. The movie is sweet and weird. It is sweet because Princess Tiana finds love. It's weird because this girl kisses the frog and gets kissing marks all over the frog.
